Some Simple Ways to Save Water

Posted by newbornjordanshoes1126 on July 18th, 2008

You would think that water would not be a natural resource that is being depleted. It rains and we replenish, right? Not necessarily.

I live in a city that always has a water shortage during the Summer. Because we are in a very dry climate, we highly depend on the runoff from the Winter’s snow in the mountains. However, it dissipates almost as quickly as it comes down. We have Summer watering restrictions and many of us don’t wash our cars but depend on Mother Nature to take care of the dirt.

Also, what about water use in your home? Do you turn off the water when you’re not using it? Of course, you say. But how about when you’re brushing your teeth? When you’re doing the dishes? And, if you’re anything like me, I tend to wash clothes so that they have that fresh feel, not necessarily because they are dirty.

So, how can we do our part to save this natural resource? Besides the ways mentioned above (turn off the water, don’t wash your car), you can reduce water usage by getting a low flow toilet and shower head. You can also reduce the amount of clothes washing.

I’ve come across a product that will refresh your clothes in the dryer. Now that, too, uses electricity, I know, but only 10 minutes rather than the hour it takes to run the washer and dryer, plus the water. Not washing clothes as much also reduces the detergents getting into our water supply. Of course, you should be using natural detergents (without toxins); however, the less amount of detergent in our water supply, the better.

Here are some stats that floored me. On average, in the United States alone, there are over 115 million households that wash 400 loads of laundry per year. That’s about 7 loads per week; a large family does that. According to some estimates, that would be over 2 trillion gallons of water and 132 billion kilowatt hours of electricity used per year to wash and dry our clothes. Wow!

I’m always looking for products and ways to do my part and want to share what I’ve found. I’ve found a way to refresh my clothes rather than wash them. I found ways to save water in small ways in my home. Join me in saving our water.
